Hayden's Story

Profile

Hayden was born on July 9th, 2005 in St. Joseph, MO. I was considered a high risk pregnancy because we had lost his big brother, Conner, when I was 6 1/2 months pregnant. We never found out what had happened with Conner but they think I might have been having small blood clots that made it to him through the blood stream. So, Hayden's pregnancy was normal and we came home with a beautiful baby boy.

Hayden is now 2 1/2 years old and has been what we thought to be a healthy boy. Until about a month ago he started to get black eyes that were just appearing without a cause. We took him to the doctor to find out how he could just be getting black eyes with no injury or falls. The doctors believed he had most likely fallen and hit his nose. After the black eyes had not gone away we took him back and found out he had a small bleed in his head and they were going to fly him to Chilren's Mercy Hospital(CMH).

Fast forward to now. CMH reviewed his CT and xrays from Heartland and discovered a mass in his pelvis and bone lesions on the bones in his skull (hints the black eyes and small brain bleed), pelvis, and right femur. The doctors informed us in the ER at CMH that this was seen in some forms of cancer. After several more tests and scans they were sure that he had stage 4(being the most critical stage) of neuroblastoma a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. It is a very rare form of cancer only found in children. There is only 650-700 cases diagnosised every year.

We know there is going to be a very long road ahead. The doctors will begin chemotherapy as soon as they get the results back from his biopsy. They will also be doing radiation therapy, bone marrow transplatation and hopefully surgery to eventually remove the orginal mass in his pelvis if they can make it small enough. We want to thank all of our family and friends for their prayers and support. Check back as often as you want and we love everyones messages. It helps us to know so many people care.

Love Hayden and family
